The reconstruction and development of Burao

The city of Burao has been the second capital of Somaliland, since the termination of the Second World War, in 1948. As from that time, it was growing up time after time with the exception of 1988-1989 when the war broke out between the Somali National Movement and the government of Siyad Barre.

The artillery shelling fired by the tyrant military troops of Siyad Barre government destroyed 60% of the buildings in the city and looted the property of the inhabitants, completely. The people got out of Burao with empty hands and scattered to Reserve Area of Ethiopia. Fortunately, the triumph of Allah came up to them and the people returned to their homes after 2 years of hard life, when the government of Mogadishu collapsed in 1991. They started their business activities together with the reconstruction of their homes and that of the city ,in general. By then, Burao has been enlarging and expanding strategically to every direction with a tremendous speed, as it now occupies at an area of 10 square kilometers. The view of Burao city is becoming more attractive and satisfactory day after day, as the buildings are turning into high splendid concrete storeys, instead of small houses. The people of Burao who are living in Europe and America took a great role in the reconstruction and development of their regional capital and that is very kind of them.

In addition to the above, all the main high ways in the township have been turned to tarmac roads, and also other valuable projects-including water connection and electrical installation to 70% of the settlement have been implemented by the governments mandated by S.N.M heroes and that of Sinlayo, in particular. The economy of the business activities in the city grew up considerably and reached to a higher level, in respect to the days of Mr. Barre. So then, let us say that Burao needs no hold back or delay, but it needs peace, stability and more development.

Mean while, I hope that the community of Burao will be free from tribalism, make unity, be aware of the tricks and tactics of their enemies and take progressive steps towards the way of getting advance and development. Burao has been rich in livestock for long; let it be an industrial city as well, home of education and home of invention, in order to compete with the other cities in the developed world.
